Though not a leading research center of Jewish culture, St. Petersburg holds some of the most rare Hebrew manuscripts in the world. These manuscripts include the oldest dated Hebrew manuscript (916), the oldest dated Torah manuscript (929), and the oldest dated full Bible manuscript (1008).
Prof. Shimon Iakerson will discuss the origins and significance of these manuscripts for modern scholarship. Iakerson is a renowned scholar of medieval Hebrew manuscripts and has held prestigious positions in various institutions.
The lecture will be followed by a guided tour of the museum (in Russian).
