There are many written documents about Yemenite Jewry and its ancient traditions, some dating back to the Second Temple period. However the visual documentations of this Jewish group are scarce, especially those from the time of the great Aliyah after the establishment of the State of Israel. It is important to document each and every Jewish community, however small, in order to learn about the entire spectrum of the Jewish experience.
Born to a family of Olim from Yemen, photographer Zion Ozeri embarked on a journey following his past, in search of vanishing Jewish customs. The descendants of the immigrants were brought up in Israel and integrated into Israeli society, partially abandoning their traditions, customs, and their parents’ mindset.
With Ozeri’s affectionate point of view, the exhibition explores the heritage of Yemenite Jews and, in many ways, documents the last generation of traditional Yemenite Jewry.
