“The Impressionists and the Dreyfus Affair: Lesser-Known Aspects”
Lecture by Yelena Galinskaya, marking the 150th Anniversary of Impressionism
This year, the world is celebrating the birth of Impressionism – the most recognizable and beloved style in modern art. When remembering the first Impressionists, it is also worth looking at them from the perspective of the political events that took place in France in the late 19th century. Seemingly serene and apolitical artists of natural themes found themselves involved in social processes related to the Dreyfus Affair. Disagreements on this issue were a point of no return and ultimately led to the split of the cohesive group.
