“Israeli Rock Through a Global Lens: From Arik Einstein to Mercedes Band”
A lecture by Lev Gankin
Israeli rock music emerged in the 1960s and solidified after the Six-Day War. For the past fifty years, it has undergone fascinating and surprising transformations. At times, it has turned towards the West, and at other times, it has sought to develop from deep internal resources, always drawing inspiration from both East and West. Israeli rock has expressed the hopes and disappointments of an entire nation, brilliantly translating musical influences into Hebrew, being nostalgic and future oriented at the same time.
Lev Genkin is a music critic, writer, journalist, author, and translator. He hosts radio programs and podcasts, as well as the Telegram channel “Sarah Sarah Shir Samach” dedicated to Israeli music (t.me/shirsamach).
The lecture is held as part of a collaboration between the “Da’at” project for the study of Eastern European Jewry and the Nadav Foundation.
A guided tour in Russian at the museum will be held on 17:00 (for ticket holders).
