Xueta Island – A Hidden History | Visit, Film, Symposium

Thursday, 19.9 // 18:30 // Past Event

Xueta” is the name of the descendants of Jewish conversos on the island of Mallorca, Spain. It refers to 15 families who intermarried and formed an isolated community. Over the centuries, the Xueta descendants concealed or denied their Jewish heritage to preserve their lives, a phenomenon that is currently undergoing change.

In a journey exploring Judaism and identity, filmmaker Dani Rotstein reveals the Xueta community of Mallorca. Through this exploration, we reveal evidence of the community’s existence through culinary culture, street signs and local customs. The film also documents current efforts to rebuild the community and restore a sense of belonging among today’s Xueta descendants.

This is the film’s premiere screening in Israel, following its presentation at many festivals around the world.

Directors: Dani Rotstein, Felipe Wolokita, and Ofer Laszewicki.
